Wakay Artist Statement:
I was born into a family of craft men. Before I became a musician I mastered the technique of making our Native instruments. We learned not by choice but by the need of helping our father to supplement the family income. The confection of instruments such as pan flutes, whistles and ocarinas became our family entertainment. My sister also made jewelry; peasant tapestries on wool; needle work and hand embroidery traditional garments for ladies (anacu blouses). I learned and mastered all of those trades, but what I like the most was the confection of instruments. Eventually, I learned how to play by ear, embracing the music that our ancestors gave us. With my instruments as passport I traveled and conquered Europe. Now the Continental USA is my new home and my quest for knowledge challenge me to explore Native American instruments. I am presently studying the infinite ways of worshiping of all the Native Nations in the USA. I embrace fellow Native in their efforts of preserving their culture, their way of life. More than a musician I see myself as an Ambassador of Goodwill, trying my very best to eradicate racism, promoting understanding among men in every town that open the door to my music and to my subliminal message of love and inner peace. - Wakay
