About the Artist:

Wakay was born in Ecuador, in the highlands of Imbabura province, in the small town of Iluman, where crafters and medicine men are as abundant as the corn growing in folk’s back yards. His maternal grandfather Antonio was one of the best, a man devoted to Nature; committed to the study of the healing elements that only Mother Earth could provide. His millenary techniques on how to pick, harvest, and collect plants he passed on to his daughter Juana and she gave the gift to Wakay early on.

Dreams also played a role in defining his path, taking him to Guayaquil where he became a merchant and sole supporter of his home at the tender age of nine. As a child entrepreneur he mastered the trades of textile design; embroidery; needle work; jewelry assembly; merchandizing techniques; management; accounting and public relations.
When his dreams became bigger than the city of Guayaquil he made Europe his home. It was on the streets of Amsterdam, playing with fellow musicians from the Andes, competing among each others for the daily bread, where he discovered his real vocation: music.

Traveling city by city all over Europe gave Wakay a sense of identity, his desire to conquer the world one smile at a time. It was then that he was invited to take part on Wayra Records in USA. It was a challenge he embraced totally unaware of what life would bring.

Wakay had to reinvent himself as a musician. The softer whisper of the Native American flute captivated him; within six months he was recording renditions of melodies he never heard before. People received him with joy and encouraged him to aim higher; that is how Wakay Music came about.

Now days Wakay produces anthologies of contemporary themes for an audience searching for harmony and emotional healing in their daily lives. His holistic perspective on life is reflected on his latest CDs: Crazy Horse Vision and Legacy; two instrumental essays on Native American traditions, religion and history.
Presently Wakay is working on the development of his Goodwill Tour, in which he is determined to teach the audience about Native American Nations: history, culture, languages, customs and values.
